Detroits East Village Is Being Transformed Into an Art Hub The New York Times

binions steak house

Initially skeptical about such a seemingly unusual item, I am now a believer, and I thank the cowboy whose out-of-the-box thinking led to this delicious addition to the Top of Binion’s menu. As they arrive, I am blown away by the massive portions and the irresistible aromas of our food. The 16-ounce cut of prime rib is easily three inches thick, and David tells us that unlike many steakhouses, Binion’s serves every single cut of prime rib with the bone in. The entrée also includes sautéed green beans, natural jus, and the choice of garlic mashed, red roasted or oven baked potato; for the prime rib, I go with the garlic mash. The meat is seared with fresh peppercorn and has been cooked to a perfect, juicy medium rare, as is the standard for prime rib. The process makes this cut so tender that I hardly need to put pressure on my knife at all as it glides through the beef with relative ease.

Historic Las Vegas Restaurants for an Old-School Dining Experience

The waiter was adequate, but did not offer us any of the sauces for our steaks, and we had to bring up our options. We were not asked to have our drinks refilled at all through the evening. With the mandatory gratuity (parties 6 or more), we feel they did not earn their tip. The wait staff should be properly trained like this is a high end restaurant as advertised. After a short drive, we enter the Binion’s Gambling Hall parking structure where parking is free for up to three hours with validation from the hotel.

A brief walk through the casino brings us to the renowned glass elevator which offers a fantastic view as we ride to the top floor labeled “Steakhouse”. We step off of the elevator and enter into a dim-lit world of old Las Vegas charm, Top of Binion’s Steakhouse. Service was good like in an old world steakhouse. We were 5 people and all of us ordered different cuts of meat but we all had the same complaint...no flavor and flat. Not worth the price, go to some of the newer steakhouses for a "good steak".

Follow Us for Must-See Las Vegas Experiences

The cakes are dense, full of quality lump crab meat, and the fried breading offers a splendid crunch to complement the moist, buttery interior. The lobster bisque, served in a moderate sized bowl, is similar in color to traditional tomato soup, topped with a scoop of home-made cream and sprinkled with fresh chives. The broth is thick and savory, with hints of pepper, onion and celery. As I continue scooping, I also discover several large chunks of tender lobster that dissolve as I begin to chew. I’m impressed with the quality of the soup and the fact that Binion’s follows through on the promise of actual lobster meat in the bisque.

Top of Binion’s Steakhouse, perched on top of the celebrated Binion’s Gambling Hall & Casino is a treasured gem in the Las Vegas community with its stunning location, prime cuisine, and excellent service. Take a ride up the glass elevator to the 24th story and enjoy a panoramic view of the valley that is truly astounding. Open for dinner daily, menu selections include a vast array of gourmet steaks and several seafood options. With rich wood and red velvet accents, this classy dining destination brings a vintage Vegas flair to the downtown area. It is also a great venue to escape the hustle and bustle of the strip located just minutes away.

With a definite emphasis on quality steak, Binion’s serves only Creekstone Farms Midwestern, corn fed, Premium Black Angus beef, and every single cut is aged for a minimum of 28 days. Steaks are broiled, or sautéed with cabernet, peppercorn or béarnaise sauce, and there is also the option for either a blue cheese or boursin cheese crust. After weighing our options, we decide to start off with the Pan Fried Crab Cakes and a bowl of Lobster Bisque. Sal commends us on our selections and disappears to place the order, giving us enough time to peruse the menu a little longer and decide what direction we plan to take this meal. This next rather interesting entrée was inspired by cowboys who were once regulars at the steakhouse during rodeos. The dish consists of a whole Australian lobster tail, fanned out, pressed, breaded and then pan fried.

The entire space is very dim-lit, setting a relaxing tone and lending an air of romance, accentuated by a single burning candle on every table. Each napkin is expertly fan folded, a subtle touch of elegance, and to complete the experience, we hear soft, classic ballads playing in the background. A fixture on Fremont Street since 1988, the Top of Binion's Steakhouse has been giving guests a view from the 24th floor. Of course, it started as the Top of the Mint in 1957, back when Fremont Street was still drivable and the view went all the way to the Strip.

With our appetizers gone, we are ready to move on and try a couple of the signature salads before we make our way to the heavier entrees. Sal returns with our drinks and I am impressed to find the mai-tai served in a tall glass, garnished with a fresh orange slice and a single maraschino cherry. It is sweet and tart, with a strong finish of quality rum, and my friend’s martini is one of the best he has ever had. With drinks in hand, Sal leaves us to look over our menus, and as we glance through, another server arrives at our table with a basket of warm dinner rolls and a side of whipped butter. The rolls are fresh, with a very crisp outer layer that opens up to a light fluffy interior, and the whipped butter spreads easily and melts quickly. They are delicious, but I limit myself to only one, because along with a reputation for old-school charm, Top of Binion’s Steakhouse is known for enormous portion sizes.

GUARDIAN 22KW GENERATOR FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Be sure to purchase the right type of generator for the fuel you’re looking to use, or check to see if it can be easily converted from one fuel source to the other (most can be). Generac Guardian 3-Phase 20kW Automatic Standby Generator Wi-Fi Enabled runs about $5,599 on average. The Generac PowerPact 7,500 Watt Standby Generator runs about $2,049 on average.

That’s just the average, though, so you should check what your specific appliances require. You should always find a model that can handle more than you think you’ll need, just in case. Installing a whole house generator or its transfer switch is a job best done by an experienced professional to ensure compliance with local safety codes. They’re built with longevity in mind, but running any type of engine constantly will cause wear and tear on batteries, belts, hoses and fluids. Heat control, similarly to high temperature shutdown, can help mitigate any damage done to a generator, which is why the team included it as a category to make up 5% of the total ranking. Those living in warmer regions or simply worried about a generator overheating may appreciate this category at 5% of the total ranking.

Summary: The 5 Best Whole House Generators

In order to take advantage of those benefits, it’s crucial you get the right generator for your unique situation and application. Check out our list of the best whole house generators to see which model would be the best for you to keep your home running even without a connection to the grid. Provides essential circuit power protection for your home, ensuring the necessities remain powered during an outage or up to whole house coverage when paired with one of Generac’s load- shedding switches. Choose what your power needs are from the list below or select whole house if you want everything to run at the same time during a power outage. Generac’s Evolution™ Controller features a multilingual LCD display that allows users to monitor battery status and track maintenance intervals to ensure your generator is always in top operating condition.

What size generator is needed to run a whole house?

Offering a best-in-class 14,000 watts, the Champion aXis goes unmatched on this list for the amount of power it outputs to your home. This generator is also the quietest of our top five with noise measured at only 62 dbA. Be the house on your block with the lights still on when the power goes out.

This expansion will allow Sunnova to add Generac’s newly updated technology to its current suite of offerings. A whole house generator provides up to a 150% return on investment and can increase the overall value of your home by 5% according to Consumer Reports and Remodeling magazine. You can manually add the wattage of each of your major appliances or check your utility bill to be perfectly sure.

Permanent Installation

The Champion aXis is designed to start automatically when your home’s power is lost, evenly manage the electric load and operate at sub-zero temperatures or in extreme heat. While this generator does not have a remote monitoring system, it does come with a 10-year limited warranty, offering more than double every other brand on this list. Briggs & Stratton home generators cost $2,400 to $15,300 depending on size, with models ranging from 10 to 48 kW. Briggs & Stratton generators feature wireless monitoring, automatic low oil shutdown, and power management to control power distribution to select appliances and prevent overloads. Standby generator installation costs depend on the size, fuel source, distance from the electrical panel and gas meter, and amount of wiring and gas plumbing to hook up.

Many get their first introduction to portable generators when they need emergency power. But portable generators have many uses around the home and on the job site. This coolant absorbs heat from the engine, then is cycled through to the radiator, where it cools off, then moves back to the engine to maintain an appropriate temperature. You should expect to pay between $1,500 and $7,500 for a whole house generator, including installation. The exact price will come down to what features you’re looking for and the cost of installation labor in your area.

This component is a crucial link between your generator and your home’s electrical system. As the leading home generator brand, Generac’s Guardian series generators, once again, set them apart from competition. Cummins standby generators cost $3,100 to $13,900 for models ranging from 13 to 40 kW.

That depends on how often you lose power; on how quickly your power company takes to restore it; and, to a lesser degree, on your tolerance for living without power. If you lose power only occasionally, a portable generator is both less expensive and less convenient. Thank you for requesting a free, no-obligation quote on a standby generator system. Quiet-Test™ Self-Test Mode runs at a lower RPM for a five or twelve minute test, making generators significantly quieter than other brands while consuming less fuel. Generator installers and most electricians install whole house generators.

visual design principles

Building from the core idea of the Gestalt circle of thought, the principle of emergence states that viewers attempt to make sense of an entire image before identifying its parts. If you’re thinking, “Hey, well-designed website would be ‘gestalt,’” you’re right on the money. However, remember that you don’t have to follow all of these principles to have a groundbreaking design. However, you don’t have to show variety, just because you need to have it in your design. It should come naturally and make up an aesthetically-pleasing composition. Like every story, a design should have a beginning and an end.

Now that you know the basic principles of design, it’s time to put them into practice. If there is no relationship between your two or more elements, your design will give a messy and unprofessional feel. So, to achieve unity, you should organize all your visual elements and make them work together in a single design composition.

Examples of Visual Design Elements and Principles

Visual design plays a crucial role in capturing the attention of viewers and conveying messages effectively. By understanding the principles and concepts behind visual design, designers can create impactful and engaging designs. These design “principles” or elements are important aspects of good design and should be considered alongside the other basic principles to create the best user experiences. Other principles of design are also touched upon in various articles on the subject. These include typography, color, Gestalt Principles, grid and alignment, framing, and shape. Some definitely fit the definition of “principles” while others are more like elements of design.

visual design principles for web designers

visual design principles

By strategically placing and repeating elements, designers can evoke a certain feeling or guide the viewer's eye through the design. By understanding and applying the principles of proportion, designers can create visually harmonious designs. For example, in architectural design, the proportions of columns, windows, and doors are carefully considered to create a balanced and visually appealing structure. In The $10k Website Process, you'll learn how to put the visual design elements and principles covered in this post into practice. You'll also have the opportunity to get expert feedback on your work and network with a community of 2,000+ web designers.

Basic Visual Design Principles

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the essential visual design concepts and delve into advanced design principles to enhance your design skills. As already mentioned, there is no real consensus in the design community about what the main principles of design actually are. That said, the following twelve principles of visual design are those mentioned most often in articles and books on the subject. Franks Spillers’ design checklist is an example of customized design principles for mobile user experience (UX) design.

Visual design strategy in UX: Principles, tutorial, template

They can bridge connections to form other elements like lines but can also be used alone to create patterns and texture. Then, I'll cover the principles that guide the use of these elements, from contrast to pattern, ensuring your design looks good and feels right. Consider a box at the bottom of your poster for ticket information or a sidebar on a website for a search bar—grouping related topics can give them importance at a lower scale. Only if all aspects of your design are well-sized and intelligently arranged can you attain this design principle.

They wondered, “How do people arrive at meaningful perceptions out of all the mess their brains perceive? Through that effort, these scientists identified four core concepts describing how humans interpret visual data. Some online graphic makers can also help you do the job faster. With Renderforest Graphic Maker you can browse through the professional templates created by our team of designers, choose the ones you need, and start editing them. Say, you’re working with text, and have chosen more than two or three typefaces and fonts, the entire composition will look all over the place.

The three pillars of Personality, Clarity, and Unity provide the foundational framework for defining a visual identity unique to you and distinct in the marketplace. Images, particularly of people and faces, will naturally draw the eye first and establish an emotional connection. Headings reinforce the imagery, leading into supporting body copy, and finally, a strong call to action. It sounds simple, but getting hierarchy right requires practice and a refined eye for detail.

You know, like how a band sounds great because all the instruments play together in harmony, not just each doing its own thing. Test out different levels of contrast and see how they affect usability. Remember, the goal is to create a user experience as pleasing to the eye as it is to the journey. With the right amount of contrast, users will be returning for seconds. These principles are often talked about separately, but in practice, they work together to create a design that’s visually appealing and makes sense to the user. Expert designers understand how the principles support, reinforce, or even contrast with each other to create the desired effect.

It can be created in a design by using lines that trace paths between different focal points. In this article, we’ll be looking at some of the visual principles to impact your design. This article is specially designed for UI designers to create a seamless and feature-rich user interface. While these principles were developed alongside visual art, web designers apply design principles that build from these core ideas. The recurrence of an element, color, shape, or form in design is called repetition. It unifies your design elements and gives them a kind of signature look.

We’ve all seen a design that has a lot of elements, but none of which is compatible with the other. You can have the word “up to” smaller just above the most important element of your poster, to keep the visual hierarchy. This is the second function of emphasis – reducing the impact of the information, you don’t want to catch the eye of your audience first. Your ship should be balanced to move forward with ease, and the same goes for the visual elements of your design. To make your composition stable and engaging for your audience, you should create balance for your elements.

Variety is most effective in design when created intentionally; otherwise, it can counter the consistency that is necessary for good design. Although visual designs are 2D and static, there are several ways to effectively convey movement. Here, movement refers to both the flow of a design piece, as well as design elements that literally appear to be in motion. Space is the area that surrounds or divides elements in a design.

18kW Guardian Series Home Generator with Transfer Switch 7228

generac whole house generator

The whole house generator is connected to a power grid, which allows it to run automatically. The generator relies on a transfer switch to detect power interruptions. Once a power outage is identified, the generator’s engine is automatically activated and fueled by natural gas, propane or diesel stored on site.

How to install a whole house generator transfer switch?

Remote monitoring could be a must-have for some homeowners who often evacuate their homes for natural events, or for those on vacation, which is why 5% of the ranking is made up of remote monitoring options among each generator. Whole house generators come in various sizes and capacities, each with a corresponding price range. Smaller generators that power essential circuits will typically be more budget-friendly than larger units that supply power to the entire house. Air-cooled generators are usually less efficient, and they tend to have shorter shelf lives when used in whole-house contexts. Liquid-cooled generators tend to work best, particularly if you live in an area that often reaches temperatures of over 100 degrees, because they are much less likely to overheat. When you’ve determined what power level you need from your whole house generator, you should consider whether you want an air-cooled or liquid-cooled system.

Plan for an extended power outage and protect everything that matters to you. If, for example, you wanted to power a window air conditioning unit, your immersion water heater and a microwave, you’d need a generator with a 10,000-watt output to be safe. You’ll want to assess your power demands to choose the ideal transfer switch for your whole house generator. The size of your generator dictates the transfer switch capacity you’ll require. A transfer switch that aligns with your generator’s output ensures efficient power distribution across your household circuits.

And are the preferred brand of homeowners who invest in home backup power. Automatic transfer switches offer effortless power restoration by detecting outages and facilitating a smooth switch to generator power. They’re particularly beneficial for those seeking a hands-off experience.

Use the watt usage chart for generators below to calculate the size required for a house. Other standby generator brands to compare are Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Honda, and Cummins. The average 2,500 square foot house in the U.S. consumes close to 6,900 watts.

Cummins generators feature sound-insulated enclosures, remote diagnostics, and intelligent load management to balance power use across multiple appliances so a smaller generator can power an entire home. Complex jobs may require long trenches for electrical conduit and gas pipes, propane tank installation, or higher labor costs to install liquid-cooled generators. A whole house generator is the most powerful type of home generator available. It’s wired to your electric panel and turns on automatically when you lose power, so your entire home stays online if you have the right size. In contrast to a standby or portable generator, a whole house generator will power many more appliances for as long as you can provide it with fuel.

What size generator for a whole house?

This engine drives an alternator to produce electricity, which is then converted to the appropriate voltage and frequency for household use. A whole house generator, also known as a standby generator, is a device that provides backup electrical power to an entire house in the event of a power outage. It operates automatically and is designed to restore power quickly and seamlessly, allowing you to maintain essential functions and appliances in your home even when the grid power is down. The Generac Guardian 3-Phase 20kW generator is one of the largest, most powerful air-cooled 3-phase generators on the market.

On average, they run from 140 to 200 hours on a propane tank, a shorter duration than their smaller counterparts. Our generator buying guide can help you select the style that’s right for you. Our generator ratings include portable and inverter models in addition to home standby generators.

generac whole house generator

A Kohler home generator costs $2,700 to $16,000 depending on size, ranging from 6 to 48 kW. Kohler generators run on natural gas or liquid propane, feature remote smartphone monitoring, and include an automatic transfer switch to turn on automatically during power outages. Generac generators cost $2,000 to $5,000 for a 7 to 24 kW whole-house unit, plus $3,000 to $5,000 for installation. Generac’s standby generators turn on automatically during power outages and run on natural gas or liquid propane. About the size of a central air conditioning unit, they run on natural gas or propane, so they don’t need to be refueled as often either. Generac is committed to sustainable, cleaner energy products poised to revolutionize the 21st century electrical grid.

The Briggs & Stratton 12,000 Watt Generator packs quite the punch for a narrow footprint unit and ships at a solid price. Though one of the smallest generators on our best-of list, this product delivers a solid 12,000 watts and comes in as one of the best ranked generators by customer reviews. Generac offers financing options for the purchase of your home generator system.

Whether a generator had an automatic transfer switch, and any included circuits, were analyzed and lumped into the total ranking. Whole house generators are able to do this because they have higher power capacities—22 to 48 kilowatts—than portable generators, and can run significantly longer without maintenance. A whole house generator can provide back-up power for your entire home, including for essential appliances like your air conditioner, sump pump and refrigerator. Property estimated and installed, you should be able to run everything at full capacity, whether you’re going off the grid permanently or you’re forced off temporarily due to an emergency. While the Champion 14-kW aXis generator is one of the most expensive whole house generators on our list, it includes excellent features to help it stand apart from its competition.

The Honeywell 10kW Home Generator had the quietest engine of the whole house generators we evaluated, with a relatively low 57 decibels of noise. You should expect to pay $1,500 at the least and $7,500 at the most, depending on the type of generator you need and the cost of labor in your area. With a yes or no based on whether a generator included overload protection, each product gained or lost points totaling 5% of the total ranking. Each generator was evaluated based on whether or not it offered a load management option, which is a popular add-on for many generator inquirists. Whole house generators can run quite loudly (65 decibels on the low end to 69+ on the high end), so it’s important to take that range into consideration when purchasing and placing your generator.

Introducing the Guardian 26kW Home Standby Generator, from the #1 Manufacturer of Backup Power Products. With more than 60 years of experience in the backup power industry, it’s no wonder why 8 out of 10 home standby generators installed are Generac. Selecting "Select My Options" provides a backup generator recommendation based on your home's size and corresponding outlets and lighting requirements and assumes natural gas appliances in the baseline calculation. If your home is an all electric home and includes electric appliances like an electric range, electric clothes dryer, electric water heater, etc. You can add these items below to accurately reflect your homes specific backup power needs.

HVAC Return Air Ducting is Important Lots is Better

return air duct design

By trial-and-error solution, balance is attained when the flow in section 1 is 860 L/s. The duct between the collector and fan inlet is 355 mm round to match the fan inlet (340 mm diameter). To minimize downwash, the stack discharge velocity must exceed 13.5 m/s, 1.5 times the design wind velocity (9 m/s) as stated in the problem definition. Therefore, the stack is 355 mm round, and the stack discharge velocity is 14.5 m/s.

Can Round Flexible Duct Be Used for HVAC Return Air?

You have to figure out a way to get return air from the ceilings of the second floor to the basement or furnace room. This air blockage also risks the HVAC unit itself, as insufficient airflow can damage an air conditioner unit by causing pressure imbalances. Similarly, a furnace with inadequate airflow can experience issues like tripping on high limit or a cracked heat exchanger.

New ductwork installation cost

Openings for rotating shafts should be sealed with bushings or other devices that minimize air leakage but that do not interfere with shaft rotation or prevent thermal expansion. Recommended specifications for duct-mounted equipment are provided later in this section. To convert round ducts to flat oval sizes, use Table 4, which is based on Equation (26) (Heyt and Diaz 1975), the circular equivalent of a flat oval duct for equal airflow, resistance, and length. Equations (18) and (19) must be used to determine friction loss. Follow the same procedure as the supply air duct to design the return air duct.

Fire Damper Installation, Configuration and Joint Method

return air duct design

Diffusers are similar to air vent registers, but they are non-adjustable. Then, at the end of the branch duct, I use an end cap instead of a butterfly fitting. I prefer to use end caps because they are cheaper and faster to build.

How To Clean Return Air Ducts?

When installing the flexible duct, we’re likely to prepare 11 feet while leaving 1 feet for buffer, in case not enough long. As a result, the friction loss increased by 3 times on average compared to a round rigid duct. We’re going to recommend the same thing here – that you leave the maximum velocity in FPM (feet per minute) at 1500. Higher velocity would create a volume of air flow that would cause “windy” noises in your ductwork and vents and will damage them over time.

return air duct design

AC duct replacement costs $1,400 to $5,600 more for upgrading old ductwork that’s damaged or too small for the new unit. Residential ductwork installation costs $25 to $55 per linear foot on average to remove the existing ducts and install new ductwork. Installing commercial ductwork costs $15 to $35 per linear foot on average, depending on the ductwork size, location, and access.

HVAC Ductwork Sizing (with Calculator): How to Size Air Ducts Easily

The sizes I provided here are based on standard duct sizes and I’ve taken into consideration the space available in the house. If you find the size doesn’t fit your house, feel free to alter it. The next table on the right (or below if you’re viewing on a phone) shows the return duct size for HVAC unit from 1.5 tons to 5 tons for RECTANGULAR RIGID duct. The same applies to rectangular and flexible ducts in the following. If you want to see the duct sizes that exceed 700 fpm, I have attached a table at the end of this post. Supply air ducts blow conditioned air from the HVAC system into the rooms throughout the building.

Some people want to learn how to design HVAC ductwork, especially for residential. So, instead of 12×22, we can use 10×28, knowing that we’re getting the same airflow capacity and velocity (noise). As a result of my simplification, the above tables can be used to find the duct size based on the tonnage of your HVAC unit.

Ton 2000 CFM

As a last resort, you may have to put a duct in the corner of a room(s). To effectively disguise it, you may build another one several feet down the wall. If they are in a child's room, they can often be painted in a decorative manner as if it was intended for them to be there. Your heart, like your furnace fan, creates a finite amount of energy each time it pumps. As blood is delivered to your shoulder, there's less energy left to deliver the remaining blood down your arm. If the blood vessels all the way to your fingertips stayed the same size as up at your shoulder, there wouldn't be enough energy to push all that blood and maintain the pressure at your fingertips.

Here is the calculator for homeowners with significant HVAC experience and for HVAC pros who understand what these boxes are asking for. As explained below, you must know the CFM needed for your entire home and for each room you are sizing ductwork to serve. Refer to Chapter 19 of the 2020 ASHRAE Handbook—HVAC Systems and Equipment for leakage-related specifications for air-handling units. Duct-mounted component leakage is controlled by specification and certified leakage data provided with equipment submittals. The following are recommended leakage-related specifications for duct-mounted equipment. Maybe you added a small or mid-sized room addition or remodeled an attic space.

For advice on optimizing the performance of the ductwork in your Dayton area home, please contact us at Ace Hardware Home Services, Inc. The air conditioner needs to run for a sufficient time to squeeze out the humidity that has seeped into your house. You achieve the highest comfort when the air conditioner removes as much humidity as possible from your interior air. Have you ever wondered how blood pressure can be measured accurately at the tip of your finger?

A key factor in the location of mechanical equipment rooms is the source of outdoor air. Poorly diluted contaminants may cause odors, health impacts, and reduced indoor air quality. The junction of two parallel streams moving at different velocities is characterized by turbulent mixing of the streams, accompanied by pressure losses. In the course of this mixing, particles moving at different velocities exchange momentum, resulting in equalization of the velocity distributions in the common stream.

Choose your preferred return duct size based on the information given. In terms of the friction loss, all duct sizes I provided in the above tables result in a friction loss well under 0.1 inch of water per 100 feet. So, if you’re calculating the static pressure for the HVAC fan, these duct sizes won’t give you a high static pressure requirement.
